Donyell Malen has officially been awarded the Serie A player of the month award for the period spanning August and September after a brilliant start to the 2026-27 campaign, which has seen the Dutchman net six goals from five league appearances.

Malen is the first player to claim the Serie A player of the month award in 2026-27. Given that only five league matches were played before the extra-long, ongoing international break, the first player of the month award of the 2026-27 season covers both August and September.

The Giallorossi centre-forward has been recognised after helping Roma to the top of the Serie A table after five matches, with a record of four victories and one draw against reigning champions Inter at the beginning of the 2026-27 campaign.

Malen has continued his excellent Serie A goalscoring form into the 2026-27 season with six goals from his first five league appearances this term. He netted a hat-trick against Fiorentina in the opening weekend, a brace against Lecce the following weekend and added his most recent strike in a 2-0 win away against Torino in mid-September.

He finished the 2025-26 season with 14 goals from 18 appearances to his name, finishing second in the league’s top goalscorer race despite the fact that he only joined Roma from Aston Villa in January.

Malen will be presented with his player of the month trophy ahead of Roma’s first home Serie A match after the international break, which falls against Genoa at the Stadio Olimpico on October 17.

Malen beat Lazio’s Davide Frattesi, Frosinone’s Giorgi Kvernadze, Cagliari’s Daniel Maldini, Inter’s Lautaro Martinez and Milan’s Adrien Rabiot to claim the player of the month award for August and September.

“Donyell Malen has confirmed the extraordinary goalscoring numbers he’s shown since he arrived in Serie A last January,” said Serie A CEO Luigi De Siervo.

“His six goals in five games immediately lit up the race for the top scorer title. His technical ability, speed and flair in front of goal make Malen one of the best strikers around. A goal machine perfectly integrated in Gasperini’s Roma chessboard.”
