As confirmed earlier this week, Barcelona veteran Marc-Andre ter Stegen, currently on loan at Girona, suffered a thigh injury during their game against Real Oviedo.

The issue is understood to be quite serious and will keep him out of action for around three months at least.

So much so that it led to talks of a possible return to Barça by cutting short his loan stint, although that has since been shot down.

However, Girona have now officially announced that the 33-year-old goalkeeper will undergo surgery for his hamstring injury later this week.

“Marc-Andre ter Stegen will undergo surgery this Friday for the injury he suffered to the hamstring of his left leg during the match against Real Oviedo,” the statement read.

“The recovery time will be determined after the procedure.”

Ter Stegen, who already missed four months of action earlier in the season after undergoing back surgery, will again be sidelined for a significant amount of time.

It could have an adverse effect on Barcelona’s summer plans as the Catalans had hoped to offload the German international permanently at the end of the season, and that his performances on loan at Girona would attract suitors.

An exact recovery timeline should become clear after Ter Stegen undergoes surgery, although his World Cup dream also appears to be in jeopardy.

Wishing him a speedy recovery!
