Glasgow Rangers have signed Olympique de Marseille centre-back Derek Cornelius (27) on a season-long loan.

The Canadian international arrived in Marseille last summer from Malmö FF, making 21 appearances last season, but struggled to maintain a place in Roberto De Zerbi’s plans. His first season at the club notably saw his manager pick midfielder Geoffrey Kondogbia (32) over him as centre-back.

Buy option included in Cornelius deal

The writing was on the wall for the defender, and he has been edging closer to the exit door, especially with Marseille making moves in the transfer window to strengthen in his position. There was an attempt by Serie A side Cremonese to steal the defender from under Rangers’ noses, however, he has now completed his move to Scotland.

Cornelius has joined the Scottish giants on a season-long loan deal. Rangers have the option to make the Canada international’s move permanent at the end of the current campaign.
