A superb long range header from Dan Burn putting Newcastle ahead early in the first half, then just after the break a clinical Joelinton header giving the keeper no chance either.

The 2-0 victory means that Eddie Howe’s side at the halfway stage of the league phase, having played four of the eight games, are sixth in the Champions League table with nine points from a possible twelve.

With the top eight automatically qualifying for the last 16 knockout stages and those finishing 9th to 24th heading into a play-off, United in a very strong position now..

For Eddie Howe and Newcastle United though, some injury worries.

Anthony Gordon forced off shortly before half-time, whilst Will Osula ended up absent from the bench despite having originally been named amongst the subs.

Eddie Howe delivering this official Newcastle United injury update after the win over Athletic Bilbao:

Eddie Howe on Anthony Gordon, who was subbed off on 41 minutes:

“I have not spoken to him and I have not really had a full run down from the medical team…but it seems like a reoccurrence of the hip injury that has been plaguing him in recent weeks.

“So we will assess that and see what damage has been done.”

Eddie Howe on Will Osula who wasn’t amongst the subs despite having been named one just over an hour before kick-off:

“We have been in discussions at length with him about his ankle in the last few days, as to whether he is fit enough to actually perform to the level that we need and he’s comfortable with.

“After a discussion, we felt it was best to withdraw him and try to get his ankle one hundred per cent right.”
