The all-time top scorer for the France national team has returned to Ligue 1 with Lille OSC announcing that Olivier Giroud (38) has joined on a free transfer from Los Angeles FC. Giroud played his last game for the MLS side on Sunday evening in the 1-0 defeat to Vancouver Whitecaps FC before travelling to France to sign a one-year contract (with an option to extend for a further year).
The 2018 World Cup winner has not played in his native domestic league since 2012, when he left Montpellier HSC for Arsenal. In his final season in Ligue 1, Giroud led Montpellier to their first league title, scoring 21 goals (joint-top scorer alongside Paris Saint-Germain’s Nenê (40)).
Giroud joins Lille in a moment of transition as they attempt to restructure their attack following the departure of Jonathan David (25), who has left the club as a free agent, and with the expectation that Edon Zhegrova (26) will be sold.
