After eight-and-a-half years, Kevin Kampl and RB Leipzig have separated. The Saxony club confirmed that they had mutually agreed to terminate the player’s contract six months ahead of schedule after the Slovenian expressed his desire to leave the club for family reasons.

“Kevin has made a huge contribution to the club during his time here,” said Managing director for sport Marcel Schäfer. “Over the course of his many seasons at the club, he became one of the faces of RB Leipzig, was a leader both on and off the pitch and played a huge part in the club’s biggest successes so far thanks to his strong and reliable performances.

“His decision to focus all of his energy on his family in this situation commands the highest respect and once more highlights his exemplary character.”

Kevin Kampl’s RB Leipzig story

Kampl joined Leipzig from Bayer Leverkusen in 2017. And has played 283 games across all competitions, returning 13 goals and creating a further 23.

During his 8.5 years at the Red Bull Arena, the 35-year-old won a DFB Pokal in 2022 and 2023, and helped Leipzig to a Champions League semi-final.

“I will carry the eight and a half years at RB Leipzig in my heart forever,” said Kampl. “From the very first day, I was welcomed here with incredible warmth.

“Together we made history, won the club’s first trophies, experienced great moments, and always got through difficult phases as one united group. That unity is what made us strong.

“I am incredibly grateful to the club, the coaches, all employees, my teammates, the supporters, and everyone in Leipzig. The time has flown by for me, a sign of how happy I was here as both a person and a player. I am sad to end this journey, but all the more proud of what we achieved together.

“I will now concentrate on my family back home, as I have done in recent months. I would not completely rule out returning to the pitch somewhere one day, even though that currently feels absolutely unrealistic, as I am dedicated to spending time with the people who are closest to me.”
