As Real Madrid started preparations for their upcoming UEFA Champions League clash against Liverpool, there was a notable absence from the training session at Valdebebas.

Indeed, teenage prodigy Franco Mastantuono is not training with the rest of the group today ahead of the Merengues’ blockbuster encounter vs Liverpool.

Why is Mastantuono not in training?

Mastantuono trained inside the Valdebebas Sports City facilities on Monday and not with the rest of the squad as he is dealing with pubalgia (groin pain), with the club confirming as much in an official statement.

“Following tests carried out today on our player Franco Mastantuono by the Real Madrid Medical Services, he has been diagnosed with pubalgia. His recovery will be monitored,” the club statement read.

No recovery period has been specified, and his return will depend on how the injury progresses.

This comes as bad news for manager Xabi Alonso, who has counted on the 18-year-old wonderkid regularly since his signing from River Plate in the summer.

So far this season, Mastantuono has played 12 games across all competitions, scoring and assisting one goal apiece.

Recently, though, the teenage prodigy has been in and out of the team, with his form dipping, coinciding with the returns of players like Jude Bellingham and Eduardo Camavinga.

As things stand, Mastantuono is unlikely to be available for tomorrow’s game against Liverpool at Anfield.

It now remains to be seen how serious the situation is with regarding to his pubalgia and when he can make a comeback for Real Madrid.

Meanwhile, Alonso was also unable to count on the defensive trio of Dani Carvajal, Antonio Rudiger, and David Alaba in training today, with the trio recovering from their respective injury woes.

Real Madrid will fly to Liverpool later today after training at Valdebebas, with Alonso opting against training at Anfield. The manager will directly appear at his press conference after landing in England, along with a player of his choosing.
