With promotion to Ligue 3 in the balance, Girondins de Bordeaux have opted to make a change on the bench. Bruno Irles has been relieved of his duties, as former player Rio Mavuba replaces him, therefore taking his first steps in first-team management.

Bordeaux won’t finish first in their National 2 pool, however, the club are still looking to secure promotion to what next season will become Ligue 3, formerly National 1. However, by finishing as the best placed team (points) in Pools A, B, and C, Les Girondins would be promoted in the event that a club from France’s top three divisions is administratively relegated as, of course, Bordeaux recently were. Several clubs are at risk of DNCG sanctions.

To reach their objective, it is Mavuba who will take the reins of the club. A 3-1 loss to Chauray on Saturday proved to be the final straw for former ESTAC Troyes manager Irles, who was relieved of his duties. Bordeaux announced that Mavuba will replace Irles until the end of the season.
