Stuttgart have announced the signing of Hertha Berlin left-back Maximilian Mittelstädt for €800k.
The Berlin native has come through the Hertha academy and featured for the Old Lady 153 times while scoring five goals during his eight-year spell. However after relegation to the 2. Bundesliga, the capital club are in desperate need of finances which has ultimately led to his sale.
As for Stuttgart, there were still lingering fears that they may join Hertha in the second tier after their 16-placed finish. Nevertheless, they comfortably manoeuvred their way past Hamburg in the controversial relegation playoff 6-1 on aggregate.
Speaking about the arrival of Mittelstädt, VfB sporting director Fabian Wohlgemuth said: “Maximilian Mittelstädt comes with Bundesliga experience and that, combined with his ability as a footballer, makes him a very good addition to our squad. We’re pleased that he’s chosen VfB in spite of other transfer options, and we offer Maxi a warm welcome to Stuttgart.”
Mittelstädt further added: “I’m pleased that the transfer to VfB has worked out. VfB are a great club with a lot of tradition and an attractive style of play. I want to do my part to help us achieve our sporting goals and I’m already looking forward to meeting my new teammates when training starts.”
Before paying homage to his former side: “I would like to thank all the players, coaches and staff at Hertha BSC who have accompanied me on my way from youth player to professional, and wish Hertha BSC a positive future in every respect.”
After confirming their safety in the Bundesliga the Swabians can now prepare for another season in the top flight where they will look to avoid another nail-biting end to the season. Mittelstädt is the third signing of the window for Die Roten after Serhou Guirassy’s loan was made permanent for €9m.
