FC Nantes have confirmed on Tuesday the dismissal of head coach Ahmed Kantari and the appointment of Vahid Halilhodžić. Kantari’s position was hanging by a thread after losing eight out of possible ten Ligue 1 games following his appointment in December. Nantes are now in a very precarious position in the Ligue 1 standings. Les Canaris are second to last, and their sole realistic hopes of survival lie on them being able to catch up 16th-placed Auxerre and win the relegation playoff.

To avoid the drop with nine games left to spare, Nantes have opted to rehire Halilhodžić. The former Bosnian striker already coached his former club between 2018 and 2019. The 73-year-old was a free agent after being dismissed from the Moroccan national team back in 2022. Halilhodžić will be the oldest-ever Ligue 1 coach in its history. He’ll make his return in the Nantes dugout next week with Les Canaris set to host Gary O’Neil’s Strasbourg as their Ligue 1 game against PSG has been postponed.
