Augsburg have confirmed that 34-year-old captain Jeffrey Gouweleeuw will remain on with his Bundesliga outfit for another season. A recent injury threatened to end Gouweleeuw’s long and storied chapter with the club. Gouweleeuw’s latest extension guarantees him at least one more season in the Fuggerstadt.
At present, Gouweleeuw is just 11 appearances shy of Daniel Baier’s all-time record of 263 FCA appearances. It should prove possible for the Dutchman to crack this before his next contract expires. Gouweleeuw commemorated his 10-year-anniversary with Augsburg on January 9th, 2026.
“FC Augsburg is my club and I feel at home here,” Gouweleeuw noted in an FCA statement. “That’s why I’m very happy that I will continue to be a part of it. After my injury, I am working step by step to get back on the pitch soon and help the team. The prospect of perhaps one day becoming FCA’s Bundesliga record player is an additional incentive for me.“
“Jeff has been with FC Augsburg for over ten years now,” FCA managing director Michael Ströll added in his own statement. “He has always taken responsibility and led the way throughout those years. We are very pleased that Jeff will be entering his twelfth season with FCA.
“We have already discussed a possible follow-up role at the club,” Ströll’s statement went on to confirm. “And we will talk in more detail about life after his active career in the coming months.”
