What had been treated as a matter of due course heading into the current international break is now official. Borussia Mönchengladbach have installed Eugen Polanski as their permanent head coach. The 39-year-old signed a contract valid through 2028 on Tuesday. Polanski began his playing career with his current Bundesliga outfit.

After retirement in 2018, the German-raised Polish international came up through the Gladbach coaching ranks. He coached the BMG reserve side for over three years before being promoted to coach Gladbach proper after Gerardo Seoane’s sacking this past September. 

Few considered Polanski an option for a permanent appointment, but the long-time club man steadily began to charm the German press corps by elevating former BMG II prospects, speaking of his profound love of his native Westphalia, and eventually delivering the right results on the pitch. 

“We are very pleased that we were able to reach an agreement with Eugen in open, constructive, and appreciative discussions,” newly installed Gladbach sporting director Rouven Schröader noted in a club statement. “He impressed us from the outset with his knowledge and character, and we are confident that with him as head coach, we can continue the positive development of recent weeks.”

“I have never made a secret of what this job at my home club means to me,” Polanski himself said. “Being head coach at Borussia gives me immense pleasure and fills me with pride. The trust placed in me by those responsible is a great incentive and confirmation of the work done by the entire team.“
