Roof drainage problems at Hamburg’s Volksparkstadion led to the cancellation of Tuesday’s Bundesliga fixture between Hamburger SV and Bayer 04 Leverkusen. Three days later, the DFL has announced that the match will not be made up until early March. The new date set for the game is Wednesday, March 4th. Kickoff will take place at 20:40.

Why is the DFL reschedule subject to such a long delay?

Unlike the other two fixtures affected by Winter Storm “Elli”, a quick reschedule was not possible. The four clubs affected by the cancellations on the first Bundesliga weekend of the 2026 calendar year will play their matches at the end of the month thanks to the fact that the four teams are no longer alive in either Germany’s domestic cup or the European competitions.

Leverkusen must still contest the DFB Pokal and may also find themselves placed in the 2025/26 Champions League playoff round taking place on February 17th, 18th, 24th, and 25th. Both Hamburg and Leverkusen fans may either cash in their tickets for the original January 13th cancelled match or simply use them to attend the March 4th encounter.
