Borussia Mönchengladbach have officially completed the loan signing of Nicolas Kühn from Como, finally giving the 26-year-old German attacker an opportunity to make his Bundesliga debut. Kühn joins the Foals for the remainder of the 2026/27 campaign. According to Kicker, Gladbach have neither paid a loan fee nor secured a purchase option as part of the agreement.

Get German Football News reported earlier that Borussia were closing in on the former Celtic attacker as sporting director Rouven Schröder sought one final offensive reinforcement before the transfer deadline. The deal is now complete. For Kühn, it represents something rather more significant than another loan.

Despite spending much of his developmental career with major German clubs, the former Germany youth international has never played in the Bundesliga.

That is finally about to change.

At the age of 26, his Bundesliga debut is at long last within reach.

Nicolas Kühn finally gets Bundesliga opportunity

Kühn passed through the youth systems of St. Pauli, Hannover 96 and RB Leipzig before continuing his development with Ajax and Bayern Munich. His senior football in Germany nevertheless came exclusively below the top flight. Kühn featured for Bayern II in the 3. Liga and later spent time with Erzgebirge Aue in the 2. Bundesliga before leaving Germany for Rapid Vienna in 2022.

The move abroad ultimately unlocked his career. After establishing himself in Austria, Kühn joined Celtic in January 2024 and subsequently produced the strongest football of his professional career. The left-footed attacker registered 24 goals and 18 assists across 69 competitive appearances for the Scottish giants. His performances also translated to the Champions League, where Kühn scored three times, including twice against former youth club Leipzig.

His outstanding 2024/25 campaign yielded 36 goal contributions in 51 appearances and even pushed him toward consideration for the German senior national team. Como responded by investing €19m in Kühn last summer.

The move to Italy did not produce the expected next step.

Gladbach offer Kühn reset after difficult Como season

Kühn struggled to establish himself under Cesc Fàbregas. He made 25 competitive appearances during his first season in Italy but accumulated only 790 minutes and contributed to three goals. In Serie A specifically, 17 of his 23 appearances came from the bench.

His estimated market value subsequently dropped from €17m to approximately €10m, while Kühn was omitted from Como’s opening squads of the new campaign. Gladbach now provide an opportunity to reset.

The move also fits a specific squad need identified throughout preseason. Franck Honorat remains an established right-sided option, while Robin Hack and Hugo Bolin offer alternatives elsewhere across the attacking line.

Kühn introduces a different profile.

He is quick, comfortable attacking defenders directly and capable of operating from either flank or moving into central spaces. His preference for cutting inside onto his stronger left foot also gives Eugen Polanski another way of constructing attacks around the box.

Schröder explicitly emphasized that point when announcing the signing.

“We always said that we wanted to act if another exciting window opened up for a player who could immediately strengthen us, whose profile we did not already have in the squad and who was financially feasible,” Schröder noted in the club’s statement. “Nicolas is left-footed, flexible in attack, quick, capable of solving one-v-one situations and also carries a goal threat. He has demonstrated all of that at international level as well. We are very pleased that this opportunity arose toward the end of the transfer window.”

Kühn made clear that the chance to finally play Bundesliga football formed an important part of his decision.

“I had very good conversations with the people responsible, so it became clear to me quite quickly that I wanted to take this step,” Kühn said. “Borussia is an ambitious and cool club. I’m really looking forward to the supporters and the stadium. In general, it was always my goal to play in the Bundesliga, and I’m very happy that it has now become a reality.”
