RB Leipzig and German national team midfielder Assan Ouédraogo’s “perfect week” has regrettably been tainted by some most unfortunate news. The 19-year-old’s Bundesliga club confirmed that the teenage talent will miss the duration of the 2025 calendar year with a tendon injury in his knee.
The news comes just eight days after Ouédraogo scored in his senior national team debut and two days after he fired home a candidate for the “Bundesliga goal of the season” against Bremen in the league, Leipzig made clear that they expected the latest injury to sideline Ouédraogo for “several weeks”.
The youngster’s inspiring comeback from an injury-riddled 2024/25 campaign (during which he barely featured at all for his new top flight club) appeared to be proceeding apace. Ouédraogo featured for Leipzig, scoring three goals and registering four assists in 12 appearances across all competitions.
Ouédraogo made both his Germany U21 and German senior team national debut this autumn and was already being discussed as a potential candidate for the coming summer World Cup. Leipzig sporting director Marcel Schäfer made note of the unfortunate twist in Ouédraogo’s tale in his club statement.
“It’s an incredible shame that Assan is out of action right now,” Schäfer noted. “He was on a very good path, had made great strides in recent weeks, and had become a German international. This injury is all the more bitter for him and also for us as a team. We are keeping our fingers crossed for Assan for a speedy and full recovery.”
