Olympique Lyonnais drew 1-1 in Istanbul on Tuesday, leaving their Champions League place to be settled in Décines on 26 August. The tie is finely poised.
According to Le Progres, Lyon’s recent upswing and extra options to come, allied to what Fenerbahçe produced, mean they need not harbour any inferiority complex.
Loïs Openda rated the contest as fifty fifty after the away draw. That is hard to dispute, and this group, with varied levels of experience, has at times mishandled high-stakes occasions under Paulo Fonseca over the last year and a half. Even so, there is room for optimism.
Fenerbahçe already irritate with a lack of intensity and cohesion. Despite Fonseca repeatedly talking up their stature, from the big names on the teamsheet to their history and fervent support, the Istanbul side played at a low tempo.
With the second leg in front of their own fans and form trending upwards, Lyon have reasons to feel encouraged. The margins look slim, and focus will be essential.
