UEFA has opened disciplinary proceedings against Fenerbahçe’s Mattéo Guendouzi and Mason Greenwood, and against the club, the club said in a statement. It added it will present arguments to the competent bodies to protect the rights and interests of its players and Fenerbahçe.

The case follows last week’s heated Champions League play-off second leg against Olympique Lyonnais. Fenerbahçe won 2-1, eliminating OL.

Guendouzi made a middle-finger gesture towards Lyon supporters and his provocations led to a scuffle after full time. The following day he maintained he had done nothing wrong, saying he had been insulted, including his mother, family and children.

Greenwood joined Guendouzi in taunting the home support after the final whistle.

Guendouzi had been targeted by sections of the OL crowd during the warm-up.
