UEFA has opened disciplinary proceedings against Fenerbahçe players Mattéo Guendouzi and Mason Greenwood after the ill-tempered Champions League play-off second leg against OL in late August.
Fenerbahçe won 2-1 in Lyon, a result that knocked OL out, and tempers flared at full time. Guendouzi made a middle-finger gesture towards home supporters and further provocations sparked a melee. The club said in a statement it would present arguments to the authorities to protect the rights and interests of its players and of Fenerbahçe.
The French midfielder said the following day that he had done nothing wrong. He added that sections of the OL crowd had insulted his mother, family and children, and that he had been targeted from the warm-up.
Greenwood, like Guendouzi a former Marseille player, joined him in mocking the Lyon fans after the final whistle.
UEFA had already opened a disciplinary case last Friday to examine the incidents from the night of the match, before launching Thursday’s player-specific proceedings.
