France shines, Olise shines – but his role was unusual. At FC Bayern, this could lead to a new debate.

Michael Olise was not only a goalscorer in the 4-0 win against Ukraine, but also the central engine of France’s attacking play. He also owed his strong performance to a tactical change by national team coach Didier Deschamps. The 23-year-old initially started as usual on the right wing, but moved into attacking midfield after around an hour – with resounding effect.

Despite their clear superiority, the French team initially seemed devoid of ideas. The breakthrough only came when Olise took on more responsibility in the center. According to L’Équipe, the switch „changed everything for the French national team’s attack“. The newspaper continued: „His switch to the position of playmaker gave him wings.“

Just minutes into his new role, the Bayern professional scored to make it 2-0 and was in a great mood. The attacking midfielder completed 60 out of 64 passes, created four great chances and received the highest score from Sofascore.

„Performance fit for a textbook“

The French media were unanimous: Olise made perfect use of his central role. L’Équipe praised: „The last twenty minutes of the FC Bayern Munich attacking player belong in the textbooks for tens.“ Le Monde also saw him on the rise: „The FC Bayern Munich player, who always dribbles with precision and always provides surprises, confirmed his growing influence in the national team.“

Deschamps explained his decision after the final whistle: „Michael still has that technical quality, of course. He was in a position with us that was perhaps not always easy for him, but he was always a solution,“ said the 57-year-old. „As soon as he was in a central position and had more space, he was able to develop even better.“

Is Kompany facing a luxury problem?

At FC Bayern, Olise has only played once in the ten this season – in the Supercup against Stuttgart without any notable success. In all other competitive matches, he has been deployed on the right wing. But his gala performance in the national team could spark new discussions. Because while Olise flourished in the center for France, this role is actually reserved for Jamal Musiala at the record champions, who will soon return after a long injury break. In addition, Harry Kane has also shone as a hanging top in Musiala’s absence.

In view of Olise’s largely strong performances on the right flank at FC Bayern this season, he is likely to remain there at the club for the time being. However, if he confirms his performances in the national team in the new position, Vincent Kompany could have a real luxury problem on the ten in the future. RMC reporter Florent Gautreau said: „He is calmer when he is used at Les Bleus and in this system, so he has priority.“
