Nottingham Forest are on course for their first signing of the window, with free agent Xaver Schlager poised to become the first addition of the Oliver Glasner era.

According to The Athletic, the 28-year-old will sign a two-year deal with an option for a further 12 months after turning down rival interest.

He left RB Leipzig at the end of last season after declining a new contract.

Reuniting with Glasner appears a key factor for Forest. The fellow Austrians previously worked together at Wolfsburg.

He came through at RB Salzburg, joined Wolfsburg in 2019 and moved to Leipzig three years later.

Reinforcing midfield is a priority after Elliot Anderson’s British record £116 million switch to Manchester City left a sizeable gap.

Schlager should join up in time for next week’s 12-day camp in Portugal, giving Glasner valuable time with his squad before the new campaign.

Glasner was confirmed as head coach last week, replacing Vitor Pereira. He will hope to mirror his Selhurst Park success.

Further signings are anticipated before the window closes on 1 September, with full-back, centre-back and possibly a goalkeeper targeted.

Schlager would join a midfield unit featuring Ibrahim Sangare, Nicolas Dominguez and Ryan Yates. Forest have also been linked with Tottenham’s Lucas Bergvall, Celtic’s Arne Engels and Inter’s Davide Frattesi.
