Amine Gouiri was forced to leave the pitch at the Stade Vélodrome against Lorient this Friday, September 12, during Ligue 1's Matchday 4. After suffering a brutal blow to the face in the 43rd minute, he was replaced before the break by Matt O’Riley. The extent of his injury remains uncertain.

What started as a brilliant Marseille evening at the Vélodrome took a worrying turn with the forced exit of the former Rennes striker. Despite a resounding 4-0 victory over Les Merlus, courtesy of goals from Mason Greenwood, Benjamin Pavard, and Angel Gomes, Gouiri’s condition has become the main concern for the Marseille staff and supporters alike.

A dramatic collision leaves its mark

The incident occurred during what appeared to be a routine phase of play. In the midst of a Marseille attack, Lorient defender Bamo Méité attempted to clear the ball with a leap. His knee struck Gouiri square in the face as the Marseille forward tried to recover possession after a missed first touch.

The Marseille striker remained on the ground for several minutes, visibly shaken by the impact. The club’s medical staff rushed to his aid. Despite the pain, Amine Gouiri tried several times to get back to his feet before realizing he would not be able to continue.

The referee reviewed the incident but did not issue a red card, citing an offside by the striker moments earlier—a decision that drew heavy criticism from Marseille fans. The club’s staff now await the results of medical tests. Amine Gouiri could miss the upcoming clash with Real Madrid in the opening round of the 2025/26 Champions League group stage.
