Sunderland defender Omar Alderete is a doubt for Paraguay’s World Cup meeting with Germany after a knee scare.

According to Sunderland Echo, he sustained the issue in last week’s 0-0 draw with Australia, a result that confirmed Paraguay’s place in the last 32 after a heavy opening defeat to the USA. Scans appear to have ruled out significant damage.

The 29-year-old is still troubled by a muscle strain and trained away from the main group in the final session before facing Germany.

Head coach Gustavo Alfaro said they will assess him on matchday. He added that Alderete remains in pain despite the tests, there is little time to get him ready, and the decision will be left until the last minute.

Paraguay face Germany at 9.30pm UK time, live on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
