The new DFB Cup campaign is about to get underway! In the first round, FC Bayern Women kick off their title defence as reigning cup holders at second-tier side Borussia Mönchengladbach on Sunday afternoon (get your tickets here!). Head coach José Barcala’s side don't have much time to catch their breath at this stage of the season: following their 2–2 draw against Manchester City in their opening match of the league phase of the UEFA Women’s Champions League, the Munich Frauen now have a DFB Cup tie. Things have gone perfectly so far in the Bundesliga: the reigning double winners have won all five of their games and, with 18 goals, boast the league’s most prolific attack.

The DFB Cup clash against Borussia Mönchengladbach sees Bayern heading into their third competition of the season. As defending champions, they are once again among the favourites to lift the coveted trophy this year. The women’s first fixture takes them to Mönchengladbach in the Lower Rhine region. During the 2016/17 and 2018/19 Bundesliga seasons, the two teams faced each other four times in total – with the Munich side winning all four encounters, scoring 18 goals and conceding none.

The opposition: Borussia Mönchengladbach

After two years in the Regionalliga, the women’s team from the Lower Rhine region have been back in Germany’s second-highest division since 2023 and have finished the last couple of seasons in the lower half of the table. Head coach Jonas Spengler’s side have started this term with two wins, one draw and four defeats. Most recently, the Foals could only manage a goalless draw against FC Ingolstadt.

The Mönchengladbach women qualified for the DFB Cup with a 2–1 win over MSV Duisburg in the play-offs. Last season, they were knocked out by BVB in the qualifying rounds.

Head coach Barcala is still without Lena Oberdorf (knee reaction) and Magdalena Eriksson (knee issues) for the game against Gladbach. Regina van Eijk, however, is available again following her ankle injury.

Pre-match thoughts

José Barcala: “Mönchengladbach are a side with a number of experienced players who have already played in the Bundesliga. They play with great intensity and are likely to line up in a 5-3-2 formation. They look to defend many situations with one-on-one marking, putting the opposition under pressure early on. We expect to be dominant for long periods of the match, whilst Gladbach will defend tightly in a deep block. It will be important for us to remain patient, use the spaces with precision and be well-coordinated in our build-up play.”

Sarah Zadrazil: “I played against Gladbach quite a few times myself – back when they were in the Bundesliga. Now we’re in for a real cup battle in a big stadium, which will be a special setting for us. We know we’re the favourites. We want to live up to that expectation and give it our all. Our aim is clear: we want to make it back to Cologne again this year.”
