If there is one question that even the most ardent Danny Rohl fans have questioned the manager on regarding last night, it was one major decision. Not a single Rangers supporter, friend or foe of the manager, agreed with it.
Rangers were struggling. It was a poor match after an extremely unexpected opening goal. It was a stunner from Miovski. Rangers then started to fade quite aggressively. Ferencvaros took over control of the match. They were tactically superior in every single way from that moment onwards. Even if they ultimately relied on defensive lapses from Rangers to score, mistakes get punished at this level. Even a slight mistake gets punished fully.
However, one particular decision deep into the second half raised eyebrows. It had every single Rangers fan screwing their face in disgust. That decision was bringing Yousef Chermiti on.
He is the most literally abysmal striker Rangers have probably ever had. He sits alongside Eg Ostenstad and Franny Jeffers. Both of them at least scored goals. The Portuguese striker has been a stark failure. He is a symptom and epitome of everything wrong at Rangers. He also represents the Thelwell error.
Yet not only was he on the bench, he was brought on to save Rangers.
Rangers fans are not stupid. They know a player when they see one. It is abundantly clear this was a ten million pound waste of cash. Yet he was brought on to save the situation. He was meant to SOS the club in its hour of need.
This decision epitomised the notion that Danny Roll does not have a clue. There was no reason to bring on Chermiti. He has delivered nothing under Roll.
One unexpectedly good goal aside, he has been chronically abysmal. He has not even looked like a five hundred thousand pound striker. That is not Rangers fan patter. That is a literal valuation.
A damning comparison
If Fernandez had a value of three hundred thousand pounds, he barely looks worth that. He cost five million. Chermiti cost ten million. That is utterly beyond words.
Yet there he was in Hungary. He came on to do absolutely nothing. There is no endorsing that decision. There is no logic behind it.
An academy player could have come on. A youth player could have come on instead.
No justification
Yes, Finlay Curtis came on. He is a midfielder, not a striker. Yes, Rangers lack options up front. But Yousef Chermiti is chronically awful. He is utterly hated by Rangers fans.
Roll brought him on anyway.
This was never going to help his case with detractors. Many do not think he is the right man. Even his most ardent fans could not understand the decision.
They still back him. They still use the look what he inherited patter. But he still made the decision.
A question of leadership
He chose to bring on this loser. Everyone knows he cannot do anything of note. An academy player would have been preferable. Anybody else would have been preferable.
Fans would have taken James Tavernier up front instead. Anything but the Portuguese.
Yet on he came. It caused utter disquiet among Rangers fans.
That kind of decision calls everything into question. It raises doubts over whether Roll is the right man. Many figured that out from the start. Even without the dislike felt for Martin, Roll is not the man. He is not the man to take Rangers forward.
