One Moment in Time: Soaring Trautmann!

Our One Moment in Time series continues with this wonderful picture from August 1951.
There’s no particular hook, anniversary or anything significant that we’ve chosen this image for - it doesn’t need a reason.
City were taking on Wolves at Maine Road in the opening game of the 1951/52 campaign.
The sun is shining and the Kippax in the background is jammed to capacity.
Judging by the big flag in view, there is a gentle breeze blowing as Les McDowall’s side begins what will be a largely unremarkable campaign.
But this picture, taken by what we can only guess to be ‘A Bell’ of the Daily Herald, still looks spectacular 75 years later.

Bert Trautmann was still in the early stages of his Manchester City career, but already a firm favourite among Blues fans.
Brave, athletic and brilliant, he would become a City legend as time went on.
Here, he leaps to claw away a thunderous shot by Jesse Pye to keep the scores level.
Johnny Hart would later win - and miss a penalty for City - and the game ended 0-0.
Neither side would impress that campaign, with the Blues finishing in 15th in Division One, and Stan Cullis’ Wolves a point behind in 16th.
But what a picture!
