Liverpool have entered the new season with a flourish, emerging from a transfer window that will be remembered for its scale and ambition. More than £400 million has been invested, and the outcome is a squad now brimming with attacking spark and midfield ingenuity. Alexander Isak’s arrival offers a focal point of elite quality, while Florian Wirtz brings the kind of creativity that can tilt matches at the highest level.
The early signs are promising. Nine points from their opening fixtures, including wins over Newcastle and Arsenal, suggest Arne Slot’s side may once again position themselves as genuine contenders at home and abroad. For a club that stumbled in Europe last term, depth and dynamism were essential – and Liverpool appear to have delivered.
Despite one high-profile target slipping away, Darren Bent has been unequivocal in his praise. Speaking on talkSPORT, the former England striker said:
“They’ve had an A star window, Liverpool, it’s got to be one of the best ever.”
Bent pointed to the scale of investment, underlining that “it’s a lot of dough [Liverpool’s spending], in one window.” He also noted the club’s unusual rhythm in the market:
“They do their finances well, they don’t buy for a couple [of] years, then boom, crazy, but to break the British transfer record twice, it’s nuts.”
Even without Marc Guehi, a deal that collapsed late on due to Crystal Palace’s inability to secure a replacement, Bent believes the recruitment drive has been transformative.
If Liverpool’s rebuild has one lingering question, it lies at the heart of defence. Guehi would have offered the blend of reliability and youth that could insulate the squad against injury or loss of form. Instead, Slot must manage with a quartet that includes Joe Gomez – whose injury record remains a concern – and Giovanni Leoni, a raw 18-year-old.

Virgil van Dijk continues to anchor the back line, but much depends on Ibrahima Konaté rediscovering his best form and committing to a new contract. Without that security, the squad feels just one setback away from a potential imbalance.
Even so, the sheer firepower and creativity now at Anfield cannot be ignored. Slot has options in every attacking area, and Bent’s assessment reflects a wider belief that Liverpool are equipped for a season of resurgence. Should defensive fragility not become their undoing, this may well be remembered as one of the club’s most decisive summers in the modern era.
