Manchester City signed Rayan Cherki from Lyon last summer. As per a Sky Sports report, City paid £34 million for the French international. As this season has progressed City’s signing of Cherki for such a relatively small transfer fee looks like one of the biggest bargains of the summer. Cherki has added a different element to Manchester City’s play and his summer signing by City is proving to be every bit of a masterstroke.
This season, Rayan Cherki has become a key player in the Manchester City side. His ability to produce the unexpected has given Pep Guardiola’s team a different element to their play. Cherki links up City’s possession play superbly well, and his ability to produce the unexpected unsettles Manchester City’s opponents. Cherki’s ability to produce a clever backheel or an outrageous flick means that City’s opponents cannot prepare for what he might do. Not all of Cherki’s flicks and tricks come off; at times, they result in possession being turned over in dangerous positions on the pitch. The fact that he can produce these moments of brilliance and pull them off gives City an attacking option that many of their rivals do not possess.
Another aspect of Rayan Cherki’s game that stands out is that he wants the ball. The French international demands it. He isn’t passive in his play and he is eager to be the focal point of Manchester City’s possession play. He has grasped the nuances of Pep Guardiola’s demands when his team has possession. Cherki often links up City’s possession play which plays into his ability to set up and provide goals for his team.
Manchester City paid £34 million to Lyon to sign Rayan Cherki. By signing Cherki, City landed one of the premier playmakers in European football. Cherki has only enhanced his reputation at City. So far this season he has scored scored 8 goals and added 9 assists in 28 appearances. That is a superb contribution from Cherki. He also scored the second goal in Manchester City’s pivotal 2-nil win Galatasaray last night. Cherki is making an immense contribution to Pep Guardiola’s side. When you consider the price City paid Lyon to sign Cherki, his signing is a shrewd one and a bargain.
Manchester City signed one of the premier playmakers in European football for £34 million. Considering the hefty transfer fees teams pay, that is a bargain. Also, Cherki is only 22 years of age, with unlimited talent and potential. City pulled off a masterstroke by signing him for such a transfer fee. Yes, City took advantage of circumstances surrounding Cherki and Lyon, but they didn’t waste their opportunity to do so. It was a clever piece of business by City, and the more this season progresses, the more of a bargain Cherki’s signing becomes.
Rayan Cherki has been superb for Manchester City so far this season. He has quickly gone from being a player who was full of talent and potential to become a key player in this City side. Given what City paid to sign the French international last summer, Manchester City’s signing of Cherki is looking like a masterstroke pulled off by Hugo Viana in a transfer market that is filled with bloated and heavily inflated transfer fees.
