FC Bayern are in strong form at the end of the year, and Lothar Matthäus has now issued the record champions with a particularly clear interim report.
In his Sky column, the 64-year-old had clear words for Munich’s performance so far this season: „As an interim report, I give them an A and even put an asterisk behind it. The demeanour, the discipline, the implementation of the coach’s tasks, the team spirit, the joy on the pitch and also the presentation off the pitch – all that is perfect for me,“ explained the record international. Vincent Kompany’s team are unbeaten at the top of the Bundesliga after 15 matchdays and are nine points clear at the top.
One player in particular was singled out for praise, and not just in sporting terms: „For me, the player of the Bundesliga season so far is definitely Harry Kane,“ Matthäus continued.
The 32-year-old not only scores regularly, but also fulfils a central role within the team. „He not only leads the scoring charts with 19 goals. The way he performs on and off the pitch is a different Kane to the one they bought two years ago. He was brought in as a goalscorer to fill the role of Robert Lewandowski, but Kane is much more for the team. He is someone who plays, works and gets others involved,“ praised Matthäus.
His impression: „He has only just begun his collection of titles. Everyone hopes that he will stay at FC Bayern for longer. A lot was expected of him, but Kane has exceeded all expectations.“ In just 78 Bundesliga games, the Englishman has already scored 100 direct goals – a new league record since detailed data recording began.

Kane has also made an impression off the pitch. kicker recently named him Personality of the Year. After the away win in Heidenheim, the attacker expressed his surprise: „Thank you very much! I’m surprised. I’m really enjoying my time here. Since I arrived, I’ve received incredible support from the Bayern fans, but also from the German fans in general,“ explained Kane.
Director of Sport Max Eberl particularly emphasised his role as a leader. „You can’t rate what he has achieved in the last year and a half highly enough. As a personality. He has been awarded a prize by kicker – which I think is completely justified,“ said Eberl. He particularly remembered a scene after a defeat in Barcelona, when Kane spoke up after the coach’s speech: „Men, we have to do better, we have to do better as a group!“
For Eberl, Kane has long been much more than a classic center forward. „If I had to describe Harry Kane in three words, I would have answered: goals, goals, goals.“ Today, it looks different: „Down-to-earth, world class, game changer – and all of that applies at all levels.“
