Pau Cubarsi could hardly have produced a stronger statement at the 2026 World Cup. The Barcelona centre-back played every available minute for champions Spain, underlining his status as one of the most important young players in world football.

According to Mundo Deportivo, Cubarsi completed all 750 minutes of Spain’s eight matches, including extra time in the final against Argentina. He was one of only three Spanish players, alongside Unai Simon and Marc Cucurella, to play every minute of the tournament.

The 19-year-old was also named the World Cup’s Best Young Player after a remarkable tournament at the heart of Spain’s defence.

Cubarsi completed 671 of his 698 attempted passes, recording a 96 percent passing accuracy. His importance was also clear until the final seconds of the tournament, when he made a crucial intervention to prevent the attacker behind him from reaching a dangerous cross.

For Barcelona, this is further confirmation that Cubarsi is no longer simply a talented La Masia prospect. He has become an elite centre-back trusted to perform on the biggest stage.

Lamine Yamal finished second among Barca’s World Cup players for minutes played with 615, gradually increasing his involvement after returning from seven weeks out. Jules Kounde followed with 603 minutes, while Dani Olmo, Pedri and new signing Anthony Gordon were also heavily involved.

Flick must now manage his world champions

Barcelona’s attention will quickly turn towards managing the physical condition of a squad that has been heavily represented throughout the summer.

Unless they choose to return early, Spain’s eight Barca World Cup winners, Joan Garcia, Eric Garcia, Cubarsi, Gavi, Pedri, Olmo, Ferran Torres and Lamine, are expected back on August 10. Kounde and Gordon are also due to return around the same time.

That leaves Hansi Flick with a relatively short period to prepare those players for Barcelona’s La Liga opener against Elche on August 23.

Cubarsi may be the biggest example of why careful management will be necessary. Playing every minute of a World Cup at 19 is an extraordinary achievement, but Barcelona cannot ignore the physical demands placed on such a young player.

The encouraging part is that Cubarsi has once again shown an ability to handle responsibilities far beyond his age.

He went to the World Cup as one of Barcelona’s most important defenders. He returns as a world champion, the tournament’s outstanding young player and, perhaps more than ever, an undisputed pillar of Flick’s project.
