Opinion: Barcelona should consider signing Spain’s World Cup hero but only at the right price

Sometimes the most obvious transfer is also the one that requires the most caution.
Aymeric Laporte has reportedly been offered to FC Barcelona following an excellent World Cup with Spain, where his partnership with Pau Cubarsi has been mind-blowing.
This has provided an immediate argument among fans to see this relationship replicated at club level, at Barcelona.
The Blaugrana are aware of the possibility but haven’t yet made a move to try and sign the veteran central defender.
The attraction is obvious, but should Barcelona actually pursue him?
The answer is yes, but it comes with certain asterisks.
Laporte offers something Barcelona do not have in abundance: a natural left-footed centre-back with elite experience and genuine quality in possession.
At 32, he is not a project. He is a ready-made defender who has played under Pep Guardiola, won at the highest level and understands how to defend in teams that hold a high line and dominate possession.
More importantly, this World Cup has provided a useful preview of how he could function alongside Cubarsi.
Spain have built the tournament’s best defensive record around that partnership, conceding just once on their way to the finals.
Laporte has provided experience and physical authority while allowing Cubarsi to do what he does best: step forward, anticipate and dictate possession from defence.
For Hansi Flick, the balance would be tempting. Laporte could operate on the left of Cubarsi, improve Barcelona’s first phase and provide another defender capable of breaking lines with his passing.
He also brings aerial strength, an area where Barça can still improve and experience for big Champions League nights. On a pure sporting level, the answer is a resounding yes.
That is where the argument becomes complicated.
Laporte returned to Athletic Club in September 2025 and signed a contract until 2028. He is therefore not a free agent or a market opportunity Barcelona can simply pick up without consequence.
The Catalans, meanwhile, already have considerable numbers at centre-back. These numbers don’t always translate to quality depth but Barça may have to move on one of them to sign Laporte.
Cubarsi and Eric Garcia are going nowhere while Gerard Martin has emerged as a reliable option. That leaves Ronald Araujo and Andreas Christensen.
The former is a dressing room favourite and the club captain while the latter has just renewed his contract, making an exit very unlikely.
Signing Laporte would therefore be about upgrading the group rather than filling an empty position. This could cause some squad trouble.
If Laporte becomes available for a modest fee, perhaps somewhere around €10-15 million, Barcelona should seriously consider the opportunity.

At that price, his experience, left-footed profile and immediate chemistry with Cubarsi would justify the investment, provided his salary fits into the club structure.
He could give Flick two or three high-level seasons while younger defenders continue developing.
Once the operation begins moving towards €20-25 million, the answer should become no.
Barcelona are preparing to make a major investment in attack. The long-term No. 9 remains the bigger structural question, and spending significant money on a 32-year-old defender in an already crowded position would be difficult to justify.
Squad depth is valuable. Squad congestion is not.
So, should Barcelona sign Aymeric Laporte? Yes, if he becomes a genuine market opportunity. No, if they have to manufacture one.
The World Cup has shown exactly why Laporte would fit Barcelona. His partnership with Cubarsi almost sells the idea by itself. However, good recruitment is not simply about finding players who fit. It is about knowing when the fit is worth the price.
