[Opinion] Gui Negão, play your heart out for us

When I look at Gui Negão on the field, it's like seeing a bit of the past unfolding now, in the present. I see someone recent like Wesley or Dentinho, but I travel further back and I can see Jô, Gil… Even Dinei, who I don't clearly remember seeing live.

Seeing Gui Negão and this beautiful beginning of his story at Corinthians, is to see that dream that comes true, even though it seems like a utopia because it's so difficult. It's like seeing someone like me, you, or anyone else that we can see in our daily lives, with the same name as him, with the same appearance, coming from the same place and cheering for the same team.

The boy (yes, a boy) who had the responsibility of replacing the best number 9 of recent times in a team as big as Corinthians, didn't feel the weight of the shirt. How could he feel the weight of something he also grew up wearing? Guilherme, before being Gui, had Corinthians as a second skin, as a birthday cake, as a sticker and as many other things before having Corinthians as a work environment. It's hard to feel the weight when you're part of a crowd that carries that weight with him.

Gui is that kid who hopes his mom takes a while to call him inside because the soccer game is intense, it's fun… When he needs to drink water, he holds his thirst just a bit longer so he doesn't have to go inside and risk not being able to come out and reconnect with the ball. He's that boy who runs barefoot, who scrapes his knee and bleeds without caring or feeling.

Maybe he doesn't even know the dimension or what he represents on the field beyond the size and dimension of what is visible to everyone. Gui Negão says he is living a dream, perhaps without understanding the greatness of reality. And it's okay if he doesn't, he is still too young, not even a fully developed player. While he celebrates his goals and craves a steak with onions made by his mother, there are countless young people like him who long and see through his goals the possibility of reaching Corinthians.

In times where players are advised at an increasingly young age, losing innocence and simplicity, assuming polished and rehearsed speeches, increasingly generic and "plasticized", the simplicity of someone who likes to hear his name in the lineup emerges, who goes to the market simply to know if people can already recognize him outside. Gui Negão is the representative of those who dream of playing ball, something that is different from those who dream of being a professional player. It's the so-called grassroots football or football in its essence, with its purity and fun oblivious to the pressure that comes so early in adult life.

May the boy become a man while maintaining the same sparkle in his eyes and the same playful smile. May we see more and more of us on the field, in the person of Gui Negão or however many more come from the sacred Terrão.
