Rudi Garcia drew a sharp riposte from Opta after he criticised Senegal’s game management following Belgium’s extra-time win in the World Cup last 32.
According to L'Équipe, Belgium advanced 3-2 after extra time, with Senegal 2-0 up on 86 minutes before being overhauled.
The Belgium head coach, formerly of Lyon, said they expected such teams to lose their tactical shape late on. He argued that at 2-0 Senegal would sit deep to protect their goal, which he considered a serious mistake. He added he should be reminded not to do that when his side lead 2-0.
Opta mocked the stance, noting Garcia has lost three Ligue 1 matches after leading 2-0 in the 21st century, and that no coach has lost more.
Those defeats were Monaco - Saint-Étienne (5-3) in April 2001, Lyon - Le Mans (3-2) in September 2007, and Lyon - Lille (2-3) in April 2021.
