Sunderland head into the final international break on a high after Brian Brobbey’s last-minute winner at St James Park in the Tyne-Wear derby. They sit 11th after the weekend and are three points off the European places.
Sunderland Echo notes that Opta’s model has them finishing 12th on 51.15 points, with Arsenal forecast to top the table on 84.77.
Regis Le Bris’ side fell behind inside the opening 10 minutes, Anthony Gordon punishing a Luke O’Nien header to put Newcastle United ahead.
Chemsdine Talbi levelled just before the hour, and Sunderland pressed for a decisive moment to complete a league double and stretch their unbeaten league derby run to 11 games. It arrived in the final minute, Brobbey beating Aaron Ramsdale at the second attempt to trigger wild away-end celebrations.
Le Bris described it as a big achievement and a tough match, saying the crowd was intense. He accepted the opener came from their mistake, praised his players’ reaction and said half-time allowed him to realign the team before a stronger second half. He added that the win means a great deal to the team, staff and fans, noted Newcastle’s high level after playing in the Champions League last week, and said they want to keep improving.
