Sunderland’s dramatic late victory at St James Park has sharpened their push for Europe, and their 10-game Premier League form places them 11th on 13 points. The derby success provides timely momentum for the run-in.
As reported by Sunderland Echo, focus now shifts to the last 10 league games. Manchester United lead on 23 points, with Arsenal on 21 and Manchester City on 19.
Anthony Gordon put Newcastle ahead early, but Chemsdine Talbi levelled before Brian Brobbey struck a stoppage-time winner to seal it. The result completed a league double and extended Sunderland’s unbeaten league run against Newcastle to 11 games, the longest by either club in this rivalry.
Regis Le Bris hailed winning both derbies in the same year, noting a tough first half, an intense crowd and an error for the opener. He said the team reacted, adjusted at half-time and produced the second-half display they wanted, adding the win means a lot to players, staff and fans. He also pointed to Newcastle’s high level and said they want to keep improving.
The win helped Sunderland move on from a narrow home defeat by Brighton and Hove Albion and kept them in the European race. After the international break, with players returning from duty, Le Bris and his squad will aim for a strong finish and a historic second European qualification. That push resumes with a home match against struggling Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, April 12, with Spurs bottom of the 10-game form chart on three points.
