The organiser of Lionel Messi’s India visit has been detained after chaotic scenes at a packed Salt Lake Stadium, where the Argentina captain made a 20-minute appearance alongside Rodrigo De Paul and Luis Suárez.
Authorities in West Bengal confirmed the detention following a formal complaint, and demanded a written pledge to refund ticket money. According to SuperDepor.com, trouble flared after Messi departed.
He circled the pitch to greet supporters, then left immediately, despite plans for him to play a few minutes.
Some fans, many having paid more than $100, reacted angrily, with seats torn out and water bottles hurled from the stands. A number of spectators also entered the pitch.
A 37-year-old businessman, Nabin Chatterjee, said seeing Messi had been a dream, but he felt the stadium’s disorganisation meant he did not get that chance.
Messi’s trip is due to continue until Monday, taking in Kolkata, Hyderabad, Mumbai and New Delhi, including a meeting with prime minister Narendra Modi and other local figures.
A 21-metre statue depicting him lifting the World Cup was unveiled before his arrival, and the GOAT Tour features recreations of his Miami home, a symbolic throne, and a seven-a-side exhibition in Hyderabad with music and celebrities.
