A legendary Guadalajara goalkeeper is celebrating, Chivahermanos! On this day in 1973, Oswaldo Sánchez was born, a goalkeeper who left an indelible mark wearing the Rojiblanca jersey and earned a very special place in the hearts of the entire Nación Chiva thanks to his outstanding performances between the posts.

As he celebrates his 53rd birthday, we join in celebrating his life and look back at some of the most memorable chapters he experienced with Chivas.

His arrival at Chivas

Oswaldo Sánchez joined Guadalajara for the Invierno 1999 tournament and began making his mark between the posts from his very first matches. His official debut with the Rebaño came on August 15, 1999, in a 2-0 victory over Morelia, marking the beginning of a chapter that would see him become one of the greatest goalkeeping figures in Rojiblanco history. During his seven years with Chivas, he made 272 official appearances and guarded the Guadalajara goal during one of the most important stages of his career.

Champion with Chivas in the Apertura 2006

One of the most special chapters of his story with Guadalajara came in the Apertura 2006. As captain, Oswaldo was entrusted with lifting the Liga MX trophy on a night that would forever be etched into the memory of the Nación Rojiblanca.

That championship represented one of the defining moments of his time with the Rebaño and allowed him to celebrate a title with the team he loved.

Unforgettable moments of ‘San Oswaldo’

With Guadalajara, Oswaldo also competed in international tournaments such as the Copa Libertadores and Copa Merconorte. It was in the latter that he produced one of the most curious moments of his career, scoring a header against El Nacional of Ecuador.

An unusual sight for a goalkeeper, but one that reflected the personality with which Oswaldo approached every match.

A World Cup goalkeeper

His career with the Mexico National Team also featured several important chapters. Oswaldo played in three consecutive FIFA World Cups: France 1998, Korea-Japan 2002, and Germany 2006. He also represented Mexico at three Copa América tournaments, three Gold Cups, three FIFA Confederations Cups, the Pan American Games, the Olympic Games, and the FIFA U-20 World Cup.
