Óscar Sánchez refused to be drawn on Javier Aguirre ahead of Valencia’s meeting with Real Sociedad.

According to Superdeporte, Valencia and Aguirre have reached a preliminary agreement for the Mexican to become head coach. The deal is said to be in its final stretch and both sides are optimistic of closing it in the coming hours. Minor details remain, including a small payment concerning a fitness coach of Aguirre’s who is still under contract with Mexico’s national team, and the plan is for Aguirre to arrive early next week.

Asked directly about Aguirre, Sánchez said it would be presumptuous to speak about him and that the coach’s record already speaks for itself.

Sánchez added that, like any professional, he has ambitions and would welcome a chance at the elite level one day, but his focus is on getting the best from the squad now.

This is the second match of his interim spell, with a new appointment expected to follow.
