River Plate have confirmed the signing of Nicolás Otamendi following his departure from Benfica. The club said in a statement that the 38-year-old has agreed a deal running from one July 2026 to 31 December 2027.
The agreement brings his long European career to a close. He leaves Benfica after his contract expired at the end of the 2025/26 season.
During his time in Lisbon he won one league title, one League Cup and two Super Cups. He established himself as a leading figure in the side.
Before joining Benfica in 2020/21, he played for Porto, Valencia and Manchester City. His switch formed part of the deal that took Rúben Dias to City, marking his return to Portuguese football.
Beyond club football, he remains an Argentina international. A World Cup winner in Qatar in 2022, he is again among Lionel Scaloni’s options for the 2026 tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
