Nicolás Otamendi’s Benfica future remains unclear, and in Argentina his name has gathered momentum again. Speaking on ESPN, 1986 World Cup winner Oscar Ruggeri said he would like the 38-year-old to join River Plate after the World Cup.
Ruggeri also outlined what he sees as River’s priorities, naming Mauro Icardi as his preferred number nine and urging the club to concentrate funds on fewer signings. According to Glorioso 1904, José Mourinho does not want to continue with the defender.
Otamendi is out of contract at the end of the season and has been repeatedly linked with River in recent weeks. The centre-back is assessing options for the next stage of his career.
This season he has made 48 appearances for Benfica, 29 in the Liga Portugal Betclic, 14 in the Champions League, two in the Taça de Portugal, two in the Taça da Liga and one in the Supertaça.
Across 4,224 minutes he has scored three goals. He is valued at one million euros.
