It’s crunch time in major leagues around Europe. This weekend’s best five fixtures feature the Championship play-offs, Premier League title race, and El Clásico.
The Championship play-offs are one of the most dramatic periods of any season, as second-tier sides seek the jackpot of Premier League promotion. Millwall are aiming to return to the top flight for the first time in 36 years, and the Lions missed out on automatic promotion by a whisker. Hull snuck into the play-off picture at the death, and how many times have we seen late bolters end up as promotion winners?
Kick-off: 8pm BST, Friday 8th May
Where to watch: In the UK, the game will be televised live on Sky Sports.
Two old rivals in varying states of flux collide at Anfield this weekend. Liverpool look likely to salvage Champions League football despite a disappointing season, though Chelsea are on the verge of a campaign capitulation. Six straight losses leave the Blues at risk of missing out on Europe entirely. It’s a sorry state for a team that has had record-breaking investment.
Kick-off: 12:30pm, Saturday 9th May
Where to watch: UK viewers can watch the game live on TNT Sports.
Arsenal are almost there. After their season looked in danger of unraveling, Mikel Arteta’s team now stands on the verge of greatness. Four games, three in the Premier League and one in Europe, stand between the Gunners and a historic double.
Manchester City’s slip on Monday has given the North Londoners a lead to protect, as a first title in 22 years edges closer. However, a trip to West Ham will be no ‘gimme’, with the Hammers desperately battling to avoid the drop. Both teams badly need the points for very different reasons.
Kick-off: 4:30pm BST, Sunday 10th May
Where to watch: The fixture will be live in the UK on Sky Sports.
Rangers’ title dream looks all but over after back-to-back defeats, but that hasn’t reduced the stakes of this weekend’s Old Firm. A win for The Gers would all but end Celtic’s quest for the Scottish Premiership and hand Hearts the crown.
No team outside these two has won the Scottish Premiership since 1985, but that duopoly could end here. Celtic know that they cannot afford to drop points.
Kick-off: 12:00pm BST, Sunday 10th May
Where to watch: Sky Sports.
For the first time in their entire history, Barcelona get the chance to be crowned champions against their arch-rivals.
El Clásico concludes our run-down of the best football fixtures to watch this weekend, an occasion that Barcelona will be relishing.
It would take an extraordinary collapse for the Catalans to blow the title from here, with Barca boasting an 11-point lead with four games to go. However, avoid defeat and they will be able to rub extra salt into the wounds of their capital foes. It’s an opportunity that the leaders will not want to miss.
Kick-off: 8pm BST, Sunday 10th May
Where to watch: Premier Sports 1.
