Six or more goals were scored in three of Saturday’s Bundesliga encounters, but Sunday’s opening fixture had a slow start. Leipzig had all the best chances in the first-half, yet they were unable to find the net in the first 45 minutes of their first home game in 23 days.
Mio Backhaus made a couple of great saves from Assan Ouédraogo’s low drive and Christoph Baumgartner’s deflected effort. After scoring on his international debut, Ouédraogo continued his fine form with three decent attempts in the first-half.
Somehow, Bremen vastly improved after the restart. Péter Gulácsi called into action twice inside the first five minutes as Romano Schmid and Cameron Puertas threatened to open the scoring.
Suddenly, the game became a very entertaining and end-to-end affair. Yan Diomande has been praised a lot for his attacking display, but he also showed remarkable awareness to deny Jens Stage with a last-ditch tackle. At the other end, Marco Grüll’s goalline clearance kept the score level.
However, no Bremen player had a chance to stop Ouédraogo’s unbelievable strike in the 63rd minute. The 19-year-old midfielder scored his third Bundesliga goal with a ferocious shot to the top of the corner.
Bremen nearly responded twenty minutes before time, but Gulácsi denied Schmid once again. Keke Topp scored from the resulting corner-kick, although it was chalked off as the young striker was in an offside position.
The introduction of Samuel Mbangula and Victor Boniface helped Bremen to clinch a late win over Wolfsburg before the international break, and they once again entered as substitutes alongside Justin Njinmah.
Yet, it was the hosts who scored the crucial second goal with only ten minutes left in the game. In Romulo's absence, Conrad Harder was handed his first league start, but it was his replacement who sealed the win with a clinical finish.
Xaver Schlager scored his second Leipzig goal with a brilliant finish after Baumgartner’s header. The Austrian midfielder’s solitary goal for Leipzig was also against Werder Bremen, which was scored at Weserstadion three years ago.
Fellow substitute Johan Bakayoko had multiple chances to add to the scoring, but the two goals were enough to see Leipzig return to winning ways. Ole Werner saw his side climb to second after beating his former club. Bremen lost for the first time since a 4-0 defeat to Bayern Munich on matchday five.
