This was always going to be a long and gruelling summer transfer window for FC Barcelona. Despite their improved financial situation, the Catalan club remains careful about their market operations. Still, Barcelona has had some success in the market so far.

The arrival of Joan Garcia was a massive deal for La Blaugrana, especially considering the interest that the Espanyol goalkeeper had generated. Ultimately, however, he ended up joining Barcelona and that has been officially confirmed as well.

Yet, his arrival did not exactly make everyone at the club happy. One player in particular who reportedly did not particularly like the way that Garcia was acquired without getting informed about it was Marc-Andre Ter Stegen.

According to SPORT, the German goalkeeper currently has no intentions of leaving just yet and believes that he has been unfairly targeted by the club as well. Instead, he wants to stay at Barcelona and will not consider leaving until at least January.

The reason that January is being reported as the breaking point is due to the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup. To ensure his selection and retain his number one spot in the German National team, he may consider leaving for the last six months of the season to get playing time elsewhere if he cannot get it at Barcelona.

For now, however, he reportedly believes that he is the best of the three main goalkeepers at Barcelona as well. The German player believes that he is in his best physical condition right now and can compete on any level to make Hansi Flick reconsider his decision to put two other goalkeepers ahead of him in the pecking order.

No interest in joining other clubs for now

Moreover, the report states that he does not want to leave Barcelona until and unless the club can offer him the remaining salary on his contract upfront. This would be a very unlikely situation, but there are other clubs that have expressed some interest in signing the 33-year-old goalkeeper.

Still, he has not engaged in negotiations with them and continues to focus on Barcelona. Ideally, the club would like to offload him in order to free up the rather significant salary that he has right now, but this could prove to be a rather long and frustrating summer from that perspective.

The report also claims that the player will not change his mind regardless of Hansi Flick’s expected confrontation with him. Yet, with Wojciech Szczesny having renewed his contract as well, it seems unlikely for now that Ter Stegen will retain his place at Barcelona the way he would ideally like.
