A growing number of EFL clubs are turning to the Scottish leagues because they represent a market rich in value while also being relatively low risk. Financial disparities between the English leagues and Scottish leagues mean talented players can often be signed for modest fees, too.

Many possess the physical and technical attributes required to adapt quickly to English football, particularly in League One and League Two. The intensity and direct nature of the Scottish game often mirrors aspects of the EFL, easing that transition as well.

It seems both Plymouth Argyle and Oxford United are eyeing that market again this summer. Tom Cleverley will be in his second full campaign with the former but Matt Bloomfield needs to rebuild his side in the third tier after relegation in 2025/26.

Both teams will be putting plans into place for League One football next season. Even if they both had a Championship transfer shortlist in case of promotion for Plymouth and survival for Oxford, there will also be a League One list as well.

Clubs are also becoming more data-driven, identifying undervalued profiles who may have been overlooked outside of the Scottish top flight. One such option could be Falkirk defender Liam Henderson, with the centre-back in the final two years of his contract and interesting the League One clubs.

Oxford and Plymouth are both keen on the 29-year-old, who has developed a reputation for scoring goals despite being a central defender. He has spent his entire career in Scotland, with Hearts, Stenhousemuir, Cowdenbeath, Edinburgh City, and Arbroath among the clubs he has played most for.

In two stints with Falkirk, Henderson has 166 appearances, 22 goals, and 10 assists. Oxford and Plymouth are both said to be considering summer moves for Henderson, per the Daily Record.

It's said the League One clubs have had the big defender watched closely in the final weeks of the season. Henderson has reportedly impressed scouts of the two clubs and they have stepped up their interest. They state that it would take a significant six-figure bid to tempt Falkirk to sell.

Oxford and Plymouth might be slow to get going in the League One transfer market

Following recent relegations for Plymouth and Oxford to League One, both clubs may initially struggle to build momentum in the 2026 summer transfer window because of uncertainty surrounding key players attracting Championship interest.

Plymouth are likely to face enquiries for some of their standout performers after just missing out on the play-offs, while Oxford also have individuals capable of stepping back up to the second tier immediately.

That creates a difficult balancing act. Before making major additions, both clubs will need clarity on departures, wages, and squad depth to avoid recruiting for positions that could suddenly become overcrowded. They will need to take stock and know what they are left with.

Recently relegated clubs often operate in stages during the market, and both sides may need patience before reshaping their squads properly. However, with ambitions of mounting an immediate promotion push, neither can afford a slow rebuild for too long.
