Clément Lenglet’s arrival at Benfica has stirred excitement, and former Nancy boss Pablo Correa says the centre-back displayed striking maturity from the outset after stepping up under him.

"He never once felt the pressure of playing in the first team. He was always in good physical shape and very attentive to tactical matters. He grew up in a family that respected his decisions. When he was young he already had the same maturity he has today," Correa said, speaking to A BOLA. He added: "Very intelligent, well educated, and he always knew how to make the right decisions."

His quality saw him take the captain’s armband at a very early stage, then lead Nancy to the 2015/16 Ligue 2 title before joining Sevilla. That move began a decade with Barcelona, Tottenham, Aston Villa and Atlético de Madrid.

"The career he has does not surprise me because he worked hard to reach important teams."

Lenglet now starts a new chapter with Benfica, and Marco Silva hopes to draw on his experience, tactical intelligence and leadership to bolster a defence identified as a priority in this window, a signing that has raised expectations for 2026/27.
