Palmeiras completed their work at the Academia de Futebol on Tuesday ahead of a decisive Copa do Brasil quarter-final at Santos on Wednesday night, holding a 3-0 first-leg lead from last Wednesday at Nubank Parque. According to Nosso Palestra, Abel Ferreira could have reinforcements after key players trained with the squad.
The tie resumes at 21:30 Brasília time at Vila Belmiro. Palmeiras can lose by two goals and still reach the semi-finals, a three-goal defeat would take it to penalties.
In their final session before the clássico, the staff oversaw a tactical workout followed by a light recreational exercise. Alexander Barboza, Piquerez and Jhon Arias all trained normally with the group, as they did on Monday.
Their presence boosts options for the trip to Vila Belmiro, after the Verdão felt the absence of players against Mirassol in the Campeonato Brasileiro.
Palmeiras have fared well away to Santos during Ferreira’s tenure. Since the Portuguese coach arrived in December 2020, they have played seven times at Vila, with three wins, two draws and two defeats.
Across the last 22 meetings in all venues, Palmeiras have lost only three, winning 15 and drawing four.
The clubs have met twice before in the Copa do Brasil, and Palmeiras advanced on both occasions. In the 1998 semi-final they progressed under the old away goals rule after 1-1 at Palestra Italia and 2-2 at Vila Belmiro, then beat Cruzeiro in the final. In 2015, they lost 1-0 away and won 2-1 at the then Allianz Parque, lifting the trophy on penalties.
