Palmeiras gain hope of re-signing Danilo after Botafogo sideline him

Botafogo’s decision to sideline Danilo has revived Palmeiras’ hopes of re-signing the midfielder in the mid-year window, with a major stumbling block now cleared.

According to Globo.com, Palmeiras had assumed a move was off because he was set to exceed the 12-game limit for switching between Série A clubs. Danilo asked not to be named in Sunday’s squad, when he would have reached 13 appearances, which displeased Botafogo and led to a decision not to use him again before the World Cup, keeping him eligible domestically. Flamengo are also interested.

At the start of the year Palmeiras made contact and signalled a 20 million euro offer, with around 5 million euros in add-ons. John Textor, then running the SAF, did not want to negotiate. Palmeiras kept him on their radar but felt Botafogo would not open talks with a Brazilian rival.

The picture has shifted with his removal from the team, yet Europe is still viewed as the likeliest destination, with any decision expected after the World Cup. Included in Carlo Ancelotti’s 26-man group, Danilo could attract bids near 40 million euros, and he wants to play for a leading club.

Palmeiras are not in negotiations now, but are monitoring and could go beyond the 25 million euros floated earlier in the year, though no new figure has been set. Danilo remains their preferred option and the board are not pursuing alternatives.

A Palmeiras academy graduate aged 25, Danilo helped deliver Libertadores titles in 2020 and 2021, the 2020 Copa do Brasil, the 2022 Recopa, the 2022 Campeonato Paulista and the 2022 Brasileirão.
