Palmeiras are in talks to sign Jhon Arias from Wolverhampton, the Colombian attacking midfielder who previously starred for Fluminense.

According to Globo.com, Palmeiras have long targeted Arias, having tried to land him at the start of last year but failed to lure him from Fluminense. He moved to Europe mid-season.

At the English club, Arias is amid a turbulent spell, with the team bottom of the English top flight on seven points from 21 matches, 16 defeats, four draws and only one win.

He has played 22 matches for Wolverhampton, 15 as a starter, and has scored one goal.

Talks remain at an early stage, but Palmeiras intend to step up their efforts. They hope to use Wolverhampton's predicament as a potential lever, with the club a serious candidate to drop to the second tier.

Arias, 28, is one of Colombia's leading players and wants to be in good shape for the World Cup.
