Palmeiras have initiated steps to renew 29-year-old defender Murilo’s contract, with plans to progress talks during the World Cup break. The pause ends two days before the transfer window opens on 20 July.

Both sides have signalled a wish to extend, with a two-season add-on proposed, taking the deal from December 2027 to the end of 2029. Nosso Palestra initially reported that the agreement would include a pay rise.

Murilo is regarded as one of the team’s leaders and captained the side against Chapecoense on Sunday.

He has made 229 appearances for Palmeiras, scoring 23 goals, and has eight trophies: Paulistão in 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2026, the Recopa Sudamericana in 2022, the Brasileirão in 2022 and 2023, and the Supercopa do Brasil in 2023.

Palmeiras also have four centre-backs, Gustavo Gómez, Benedetti, Bruno Fuchs and Alexander Barboza, the latter newly arrived from Botafogo and due to debut only after the World Cup. Naves has returned from loan but is not expected to be reintegrated, with a transfer planned for the window.
