Pape Gueye has described the state of his former club Marseille as sad after returning to his old ground.

According to GetFootballNewsFrance.com, the Villarreal midfielder was back at the Vélodrome on Sunday and featured as Senegal beat the Comoros 1-0 in a friendly.

Gueye came through the ranks in France, joined OM in 2020 and left on a free for Villarreal in 2024 after four years. He made 115 appearances for Les Phocéens.

Marseille have hit trouble off the pitch, financially hamstrung and forced to sell key assets in the summer, while unable to register a single signing. Heading into the international break, they were second bottom in Ligue 1 and had lost five of their first six games in all competitions.

“It’s sad. I am still passionate (about OM), and I watch all of their matches. I still have friends that play there. As a supporter, it is a bit difficult,” said the Senegal international in his post-match mixed zone interview.
