Paraag Marathe, the Leeds United chairman, has stepped down from the Rangers board, where he served as vice-chairman, amid concerns over compliance with UEFA’s multi-club ownership rules.

According to Leeds Live, Marathe took up the role after 49ers Enterprises joined Andrew Cavenagh in the club’s acquisition, and fellow Leeds director Gene Schneur has also vacated his position at the Scottish Premiership side.

The departures follow discussions with UEFA, with the move understood to be designed to protect both clubs should they be drawn into the same European competition in future.

A recent example saw Crystal Palace barred from the same competition as Lyon, as John Textor held shares in both clubs at the time.

Under UEFA’s updated rules, if two teams with overlapping investors qualify for the same tournament and are ruled to be in breach, one loses its place. Leeds, still in the FA Cup and battling Premier League survival, retain a route into Europe as things stand.

The assessment deadline is the first of March, prompting the changes, which do not affect the actual ownership structures at either Leeds or Rangers.
